I think that Doc Smith is more lame than racist. Seriously, where did u dig up this "treasure"?

Admin reply: Aw, c'mon, be kind. This is a classic of early SF.

I am not thrilled with your choice of narrating an E.E. Doc Smith story. I don't like speaking ill of the dead, but the man was a racist and a chauvinist. How can you support that?

Admin reply: Well, first, if you do not like any particular story that we are podcasting, you do not have to listen. Second, someone can have extreme views and still be an interesting writer-- especially from a historical perspective. I think Smith is a great example of pulpy space opera SF before physics was so much more sophisticated. His writing is stilted, soapy, and decidedly silly at times, but still worth the listen or read. "The views of any particular writer that we narrate do not necessarily represent those of Uvula Audio. yada yada..." Third, I take it that you are a native American from your name? Although Smith's character Stevens does casually wipe out a boatload of six-armed Ganymeade aborigines in "Spacehounds" (hmmmm an homage to Burroughs I wonder?) and refers to them as "Indians", go easy on the guy-- we are talking about someone who wrote almost 80 years ago. He is a product of his times, and in my opinion a lot of what he says was tongue-in-cheek. Not that it ameliorates anything, but compared to his contemporaries Smith is not all that racist; I could point out dozens of his peers who were far more actively impugning of the "non-white" races than Smith.

I thank you for making "I, Libertine" available and I did make a paypal contribution for this reason.
That said, I found the range of loudness too great for listening while driving (either the soft parts would get lost in the ambient noise or the loud parts would blast my eardrums). I would urge the voice actors to emulate the old radio plays where performers had to deal with a similar lack of dynamic range.

Admin reply: First, thank you ever so much for the donation. It was actually quite kind of you. We get so few donations that when we do get one, we appreciate your thoughtfulness more than you can imagine. Since we do our recordings because we love it and not for money, it is *always* nice to see someone appreciate our work.

Second, I'm so sorry, but "I Libertine" was the very first bookcast that we ever did. Hence the quality of the podcast is not as high as it is now, several years later. Since then we have learned quite a bit about podcasting, sound editing, and recording. We have also gotten much better equipment. Also, unfortunately, that particular story does change change tone very quickly and gets loud and soft from paragraph to paragraph quite a bit. Please feel free to listen to our newest podcasts and see the difference in quality. We have an ee doc smith book that premieres this week, and then more Baum coming up in a few weeks!

The Doc Savage podcast is kewl, but I think the sound effects are kind of lame. Seriously. The story would be fine without them.

Admin reply: Louis, I'm sorry that you feel that way about the sound FX. We usually only include sound FX with children/young adult stories. Since TMOB is being podcast on both the adult and kid's streams, we thought we would default to the YA style of presentation. If it makes you feel any better, future serious adult podcasts will have no sound FX.

I'm truly impressed with your recordings, particularly of the more obscure Baum stuff. Keep up the amazing work.

Dr. Camp's voice sounds dreamy!!! Seriously, I enjoyed your reading of "I, Libertine" Still have to get through 11 chapters, but it's going good so far. Keep up the wonderful work!

Admin reply: Thanks, Chris. I, Libertine was the first book that we podcast. I suspect that the quality of our work has gone up since so you may want to listen to something more recent...

I agree. Your podcasts are great. Very professional. And my kids really love the Baum stories. My daughter liked them so much that she named her cat Trot! Cheers.
